Autism Matters is a center-based intervention program dedicated to children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). In our unique, innovative approach, we combine the expertise of state-licensed and nationally certified Speech-Language Pathologists (SLP) and evidence-based treatment methods based on the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and Verbal Behavior (VB).

SLP and program founder, Tara Bertone, has been working with children diagnosed with autism for over 15 years in a variety of settings, including traditional ABA programs, VB programs, and multidisciplinary clinics.

Throughout all of her education and experience, Tara witnessed the stricking impact of ABA and VB programs for learning and behavior in children with ASD. However, she was often confused by the minimal, if any, collaboration between ABA professionals and SLPs. In her experience, ABA professionals are experts in managing behaviors and teaching new skills; but rarely does an SLP play a significant role in curriculum development, which is largely speech, language and communication-based. This scenario is particularly problematic for children who are non-verbal or present with a range of complicated speech disorders.

Autism Matters was founded to address the disconnection between these two disciplines by incorporating both ABA principles (HOW to teach) and speech-language pathology expertise (WHAT to teach). The collaboration of professionals from these two disciplines offers the BEST OF BOTH WORLDS for children with ASD to develop speech, language, communication and social skills to their full potential.
